Section 12 - Analysis of completed thriller

Thriller analysis - Who am i?

Narrative Structure
There is no dialogue throughout the opening sequence of the thriller, we are introduced to a character who is getting ready to go to school, we see him walking to school then back to his home after a hard day at school, this sequence uses piano music and this shows innocence in the character and the audience does not suspect anything of this character.

The music changes the tone when he wakes up in an unknown area and he is unfamiliar with his surroundings and the audience is suddenly thrust into a story and we are eager to found out why this character is here. We are then shown that this character has in fact killed someone but he is unaware of the event even happening, this changes the audience’s perspective but eager to know why he is there and if he has a form of 'dark side'.

Thriller Codes and Conventions
The thriller uses codes and conventions of typical thrillers such as partial vision which hides specific aspects of the story or a character and this makes the viewing experience better as the audience are eager to learn more about this character. The thriller also uses music to set tones and change the mood of the scene as the opening begins with a piano playing then the music suddenly changes when the scene does to a drone noise which creates a dark tone in the scene and gives the audience emotion to this scene such as tension.

Camerawork
The camerawork shows all the aspects of the characters daily routine showing medium shots which would portray that the character is familiar with the area, this is then contrasted later on when the character wakes up and the camera uses an extreme long shot to show that this character is surrounded by nothing but the woods which the character is unfamiliar with ann this shows a scence of loneliness in the character and no-one is there to hear him or help him escape from this area and what he has just done and woke up to see.

Mise-En-Scene
The opening sequence uses the typical urban areas you would see in many thrillers and the character is familiar to these surroundings. As the scene changes the phone still goes off like in the characters everyday routine but he wakes up in an unknown forest area which the character has never been before so this contrast the typical urban surroundings and familiar areas so this portrays the character is alone and unfamiliar with the area  in the middle of nowhere so this portrays loneliness in the character.

Sound
The music at the beginning of the opening sequence is a piano playing, this sets the mood of the first scene when we are introduced to the character who is getting ready to go to school, this music portrays innocence in this character and the audience would not suspect anything of this character as all they are doing is their daily routine.

The music suddenly changes when the character walks home and sets a tone to the audience that not everything is as it seems, the character wakes up in a unknown area and the music portrays a dark tone which goes with the scene as he wakes up to discover he is covered in blood and the music portrays that the character has a 'dark side' to them and this would make the audience change the perspective of this character and make them eager to learn what actually happened to this character and why.

Editing
The editing of the opening sequence uses cuts between different times of the day as at the start we see the character walking to school during the day then we skip to when he arrives home. The scene suddenly skips to the day after when the character wakes up again but this time he wakes up in a area unfamiliar to him.

Graphics
The graphics of the opening sequence follow codes and conventions as it uses dark backgrounds during the credits with white writing, it also uses dark graphics such as the black and white background to change the mood of the scene as the scene changes when the character wakes up to discover that he is covered in someone else’s blood and he is unknown to what happened the night before and how he woke up in this place.
